AI chat
A controlled chat with accessible input, streaming states, stop, retry, inline agent definitions and complete source you can copy.
A conversation that fits your applicationLink to section
AIChat brings a clear empty state, readable conversation and accessible
AIComposer together. You supply messages, draft and request
state. Your application owns the backend, credentials, storage and cancellation.
The Block has no AI runtime dependency and makes no network requests.
Send, stop, retry and copy remain useful Free features. Optional attachments add consumer-controlled reference review; the local reading recipe below stays outside the copied presentation. There are no remote file uploads, tools, agent deployment, voice, rich Markdown or message persistence in this Block. Text is rendered literally, including code and HTML characters.

Configure the public UI package and tokens. This Block
requires @pycolors/ui 1.6.0 or later, which includes AIComposer. The isolated
consumer was tested with UI 1.6.0; test newer versions in your own application.
Copy all six files, keeping their relative imports. Use the copy button or select the code manually if clipboard permission is unavailable. The Blocks catalog also offers Code → Download ZIP with the same complete source. No Registry, CLI or hosted chat service is needed.

Read in this browser only. No upload or storage. Choose a non-sensitive file; its visible name may appear in confirmed JSON, never its contents.
Responses and agent drafts are fixed examples. Only the exact agent sample requests open a definition. A file is read only when you choose Read locally; it is not analyzed by a model. Nothing is sent to a provider or stored remotely. Confirmed definitions can be copied or downloaded locally.
This preview uses fictional, fixed local responses. Try Fail next response, stop a response, edit the next message, then retry. Nothing is sent or stored; a successful demo does not prove a provider integration. Define an agent (demo) prefills an exact sample request. Send it to open a simulated draft, edit its fields, then confirm explicitly. Try Fail next confirmation or cancel while confirming. Only confirmed local definitions offer copy/download.
Install by copying sourceLink to section
Use React 18 or later and the public UI/token setup above, including its
lucide-react peer dependency (tested with 1.49.0). Preserve the client
directives. Import your copied entry point; never import marketing internals or
package source paths. Configure Tailwind to scan your copied files.
The source does not receive automatic updates. Customize and validate it in your application.

| Prop | Responsibility |
|---|---|
messages | Ordered user/assistant text with stable unique IDs. Update the same ID while streaming. |
draft, onDraftChange | Your controlled input. Suggestions prefill without sending. |
status | idle, submitting, streaming, stopped or error. |
onSubmit(draft) | Accept a nonblank request and set busy synchronously. The Block never clears the draft. |
onStop | Optional transport cancellation. Set stopped only after cancellation settles; reject late chunks. |
onRetry | Optional retry of the last failed/stopped request, not the newer draft. No automatic retry. |
onCopy(message) | Promise resolving after a successful clipboard write, rejecting on failure. |
errorMessage | Safe user-facing error. Never expose raw provider errors or credentials. |
disabled | Disable input and mutation actions while retaining readable messages. |
ref | Native textarea ref for consumer focus management. |
Pass onCopy={(message) => navigator.clipboard.writeText(message.text)} in a client
component. The UI confirms only completed copies and offers manual selection on
failure. Copy during streaming copies the text at click time, not future tokens.
Keep submitted text in your message/request state before clearing an accepted draft. Failures must preserve newer edits. Stop/retry must keep partial output visible until replacement starts and must not duplicate the user message.
Define an agent in the conversationLink to section
Pass the optional agentDefinition prop to add inline review. Omitting it keeps
basic chat unchanged. A supplied draft, a suggestion click or model text never
confirms anything. Only the separate Confirm definition action calls your
consumer. The composer and the review form are independent sibling forms.
| Field or callback | Contract |
|---|---|
draft | Required id, revision, name, purpose, instructions. Keep IDs stable; increment revision on every edit, including capabilities and provenance. |
status | draft, confirming, created, error or cancelled, supplied by your application. |
requestedCapabilities | Optional read-only strings describing requests. These are not granted permissions. |
sourceReferences | Optional read-only { id, label } provenance. Labels render as text; no links are fetched and no file content is read. |
onChange(fields) | Receives only editable name/purpose/instructions. Preserve the other fields, increment revision and clear resolved validation errors. |
errors, errorMessage | Safe field errors and confirmation error. Name/purpose/instructions must be nonblank; perform authoritative validation in your consumer. |
onConfirm(snapshot) | Detached snapshot of the reviewed ID, revision and allowlisted fields. Set confirming synchronously and settle every attempt. |
onCancel({ id, revision }) | Invalidate pending work and set cancelled. This is not remote deletion. Values remain readable. |
confirmed | Required with created: the actual consumer-confirmed snapshot. Copy/export is offered only when identity, revision and approved fields still match the displayed draft. |
Pending confirmation disables editing and repeated submission; cancel remains available. Retry keeps edits and submits the current revision. The Block prevents duplicate UI confirmation, but backend validation, idempotency, request identity, transport cancellation and persistence remain your responsibility. Ignore stale results after cancellation, replacement or unmount. Any server-modified definition must return as a new draft for review, not as a silently approved result.
This complete local consumer maps one exact sample request to a draft. It does
not infer intent from arbitrary text. Its default confirmation returns the
reviewed snapshot in memory. The confirm callback is an application seam, not a
bundled backend or provider. A real intent/model adapter supplies the same typed
draft after validating untrusted output; it must still require explicit review.

After the consumer confirms the matching revision, the Block shows Definition
created locally. It does not mean deployed, running, connected or stored remotely.
Copy awaits the browser clipboard result; failures leave selectable JSON under
Definition JSON. Download requests a local agent-definition.json file and
reports the request, not proof that the browser saved it.
JSON uses this PyColors example format, not a universal cross-provider standard:
{
"schemaVersion": 1,
"kind": "pycolors-agent-definition",
"name": "Product reviewer",
"purpose": "Review a supplied product interface.",
"instructions": "Check clarity and keyboard access."
}Optional requestedCapabilities: string[] and sourceReferences: { id, label }[]
are included when present. Export uses an explicit allowlist; draft identity,
revision, unknown properties, hidden grants and raw file payload properties are
excluded. It does not redact secrets typed into allowed fields. Do not supply
credentials, tokens, private file content or sensitive provenance labels. Export
is a view definition; interpreting it, storing it and authorizing tools require
your own separately reviewed application integration.
Use a local reference fileLink to section
The optional attachments prop places reference controls beside the same composer.
Without it, existing text and agent-definition consumers are unchanged. The Block
renders the supplied policy, metadata, states and callbacks; it never reads files,
chooses storage, calls a parser/model or invents processing progress.
The public demo and recipe support one UTF-8 .txt or .md file, up to 512 KiB
(524,288 bytes). These limits are visible before selection. PDF, Office, images,
OCR, URLs, upload, cloud storage, indexing and RAG are not included.
- Select a supported file. Selection alone does not read it or create a draft.
- Choose Read locally. A real browser FileReader reads the bounded file; the consumer decodes strict UTF-8 and exposes a maximum 2,000-character escaped excerpt. Truncation is labelled. No model analyzes the content.
- Choose Use as reference to prefill the composer, then send the exact sample request to open an editable sample definition with source provenance.
- Review and explicitly confirm. The filename may appear in
sourceReferencesin JSON; the raw document and excerpt are never copied into the definition.
Only use non-sensitive files in the public demo. Content stays in browser memory; no file data is sent to an API, analytics, logs, cookies, localStorage or IndexedDB by this flow. Removal, reset and unmount release its file/reader references; this is not a guarantee of secure memory erasure. Already downloaded files are yours to remove. Your consuming application's third-party scripts, storage and backend remain your responsibility.
Attachment state ownershipLink to section
| Prop | Responsibility |
|---|---|
policy | Native picker accept, readable formatsLabel, readLabel, maximum file count/bytes and processing/privacy description. These describe the consumer's actual behavior. |
items | Stable id, filename name, byte size and selected, reading, ready, error or cancelled status. Removing an item removes it from this list. |
| Ready item | excerpt, truncated and {id,label} sourceReference, supplied only after successful processing. No raw File or content is included in agent export. |
| Error item | Safe errorMessage; do not expose raw parser errors or document contents. |
onSelect(files) | Receive native File objects. Validate count, size, extension and MIME before reading. The input resets after selection to allow reselecting the same file. |
onRead(id), onRetry(id) | Consumer owns reading, strict decoding, attempt identity and resource cleanup. Set reading synchronously; no automatic retry. |
onCancel(id), onRemove(id) | Cancel actual work, invalidate its generation and ignore all late callbacks. Removal must also invalidate any confirmation that depends on this source. |
onUse(id) | Optional action to prefill a prompt. Do not submit, confirm, grant permissions or execute work here. |
errorMessage, announcement | Safe selection error and concise transition announcement. New output does not steal focus. |
Native accept and filename extensions are picker hints, not validation or proof
of file safety. The local recipe accepts blank MIME or text/plain for .txt;
.md additionally accepts text/markdown. Incompatible MIME, multiple files,
zero/oversized files, invalid UTF-8, empty text and binary control characters are
rejected. HTML/JS/MDX characters in a valid text file remain inert text, never
rendered or executed. These client checks are UX, not server-side protection.
Invalid and duplicate selections preserve typed input and any existing valid reference. Remove the current file before replacing it. Read errors/cancellation can be retried. Removal of a linked reference preserves agent field edits, removes that provenance, increments its revision and requires confirmation again—even if a previous revision was confirmed or is still pending. Old read/confirmation results cannot restore the source or overwrite a newer draft.

Copy the two application-owned files below beside your copied Block. They have no runtime/parser dependency. They demonstrate local reading and an explicit sample workflow, not arbitrary intent interpretation, document comprehension or a running agent. Customize and validate them in your own application. If you add a reset, reset both attachment and agent state, invalidating pending confirmation as well.

Optional AI SDK integrationLink to section
The Block works without an SDK. If your application uses AI SDK, the recipe below
maps its state to the same controlled props. It was checked with ai@7.0.138 and
@ai-sdk/react@4.0.141 in an isolated consumer using a mock transport. Real-provider
execution was not run. Install these only in your consuming application;
never add a provider dependency to the copied Block.
Your server owns /api/chat, authentication, input validation, credentials,
limits and cancellation. This guide does not provision that endpoint. Client
cancellation alone cannot guarantee that upstream generation or billing stops.
Review the official useChat reference
for your installed version.

}This example retains the draft until you edit it. A production consumer may clear
an accepted draft after retaining its request snapshot; never overwrite newer edits.
Keep the transport instance stable. Supply a custom transport only for your
application integration or tests; no provider or transport is bundled in the Block.
Accessibility and limitationsLink to section
Desktop Enter sends; Shift+Enter inserts a newline. IME composition never submits. On touch-first devices Enter stays a newline; the explicit send action remains. The composer owns a form, so do not nest the Block in another form.
The message list is not a token-by-token live region. A separate status announces request transitions. Focus stays in the composer when sending and returns there when a focused stop/retry control disappears. Incoming text does not steal focus. The agent review uses labelled fields and a separate status. Incoming drafts do not autofocus. Confirmation/cancellation returns focus to its result only when the initiating focus is still inside the form or was lost; other controls keep focus. Failed required validation focuses the first invalid field. Attachment removal returns focus to the file picker button only when its removed control owned focus; read/cancel completion similarly restores the row status without taking focus from another field. Limits, errors and progress never depend on color alone. Scrolling up pauses following; Jump to latest explicitly resumes it.
The source uses semantic tokens, text wrapping and reduced-motion-safe controls. Test your own callbacks, labels, locale, screen reader and physical mobile/IME behavior. Automated accessibility checks do not certify an integration.
